Phonics: Module 30, Lesson 1 (Day 146): Identifying Words with Suffixes (-ing, -ment, -ness)
Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying words with Suffixes (-ing, -ment, -ness)
Introduction
Today, you will read and spell words with suffixes.
Visual
We are going to learn three suffixes. A suffix is a letter or group of letters placed at the end of a word to create a new word.
- Look at the word warn. It is a verb, or an action word. It means “to tell someone something bad is about to happen.” When I add the suffix -ing to make the word warning. I change the verb to a noun. A warning is something that lets you know something bad is about to happen.
- Look at the word movement. The suffix -ment was added to the verb move to make the noun movement. The suffix -ment means “the result of doing something,” so movement means “the result of moving.”
- Look at the word fairness. The suffix -ness was added to the verb fair to make the noun fairness. The suffix -ness means “the state of being or quality of being,” so fairness means “the state of being fair.”
