Introduction

Today, you will read and spell words with unaccented final syllables.

 

Visual

We are going to learn about unaccented final syllables.

  • An unaccented final syllable comes at the end of a word and is spoken with less emphasis than an accented syllable.
  • The vowel sound is usually pronounced like “uh.”

 

broken

  • This is the word broken. The final syllable in the word broken is -ken.
  • Notice how the letters e and n sound like “uhn” instead of “en.”
  • This syllable is unaccented. It does not get stressed when you say the word.

In Your Notebook:  Draw a four-column chart. Write en, on, ain, and in in the top columns on the chart.
