Introduction
Today, you will read and spell words with diphthongs.
Visual
- We are going to learn two diphthongs. A diphthong is the double vowel sound that can occur when there are two vowels side by side. Look at the word round. It has the /ou/ sound spelled with the vowel team ou.
- Now, look at the word town. In this word, it has the /ou/ sound, but it’s spelled with the vowel team ow.
Look at the word join. It has the /oi/ sound spelled with the vowel team oi. Now, look at the word boy. It also has the /oi/ sound, but it is spelled with the vowel team oy.
Task
In Your Notebook: Draw a four-column chart. Write ou, ow, oi, and oy in the top columns on the chart.
