Phonics: Module 22, Lesson 1 (Day 106): Variant Vowels
Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Variant Vowels
Introduction
Today, you will read and spell words with variant vowels.
Visual
We are going to learn about variant vowels. Variant vowels are defined as the group of letters that produce the same vowel sounds. Let’s look at a few examples.
The word pause contains the vowel sound /ô/ spelled au. The word draw contains the vowel sound /ô/ spelled aw. In the words salt, fall, and walk the letter a is followed by the letters l, ll, and lk. These spelling patterns (-al, -all, -alk) are found in many common words.
Task
In Your Notebook: Draw a five-column chart. Write au, aw, al, all, alk in the top columns on the chart.
Interactive
Directions: Read each word. Sort the word based on its spelling pattern. After completing the sort, please copy this sort into your phonics/word study journal.
