Phonics: Module 19, Lesson 1 (Day 91): Diphthongs ou, ow

Phonics: Lesson 1 -  Identifying Words with Diphthongs

Introduction

  • Today, you will read and spell words with diphthongs.

Visual

  • We are going to learn two diphthongs. A diphthong is the double vowel sound that can occur when there are two vowels side by side. Look at the word down. The letters ow are a vowel team that spells the /ou/ sound in down.
  • Now, look at the word loud. In this word, the letters ou are a vowel team that spells that same vowel sound. The vowel sound is the same in each word, even though it is spelled differently.
