Assignment: Reread and Respond
For the assignment today, you will reread The Legend of Molly Pitcher to build fluency then respond to the discussion questions.
After reading the text below, use the text to answer these discussion questions:
- What does the fact that Molly followed her husband to war tell you about her?
- What was courageous about Molly’s actions? Find details to support your answer.
The Legend of Molly Pitcher It was the time of the American Revolution. American soldiers were marching to Monmouth, New Jersey, to fight the British. Molly Hays’s husband was in the army. He was in charge of firing a cannon. Women were not allowed to fight, but Molly decided to follow him anyway. During the battle, Molly heard men calling for water. So she grabbed a pitcher, raced to a stream, and filled it. Then she ran onto the battlefield to give soldiers a drink of water. Molly kept running back and forth between the battlefield and the stream. There is no way to know how many lives she saved. Suddenly, Molly saw her husband lying on the grass. He was hurt. Molly took over, loading and firing the cannon again and again. After many hours, the Battle of Monmouth was finally over. Molly’s husband recovered, and Molly was taken to meet General George Washington. Today, most people believe that the legend of Molly Pitcher isn’t based on Molly Hays, but on the stories of several women who acted bravely during the American Revolution. Either way, we admire their courage. |
