Getting from Here to There

High above Earth, there is a team of more than twenty-four satellites called the Global Positioning System, or GPS. These satellites send navigation signals that help pilots, sailors, and drivers figure out how to get from one place to another.

Suppose you made a new friend at school, and he asks you to come to his birthday party on Saturday. Your mom will drive you there, but first she must figure out how to get to your friend’s house. What might she do? She can tap a button on her smartphone and enter or say your friend’s address. The phone then displays a map that shows her how to get there. It also gives spoken directions for her to follow. How cool is that!

The Department of Defense created GPS in the 1990s. The military used it to guide weapons. However, today most people use gps to get directions. GPS also tells you how many miles you’ve traveled and predicts when you’ll reach your destination.

Before GPS, people relied on paper maps, compasses, and written directions. Now GPS technology has added an easy way to get from here to there.

Discussion:
What does the Global Positioning System, or GPS, do? Why might GPS be especially helpful to pilots and sailors? Find sentences to support your answer.
