Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Vowel-r Syllables
Introduction
Today, you will identify, read, and spell words with vowel-r syllables.
- Look at the words above. Each word has a vowel-r syllable. In a vowel-r syllable, the letter r follows a vowel and changes the vowel sound. The vowel sound in a vowel-r syllable is neither long nor short.
party |
- Look at the word party. In the first syllable, the vowel a is followed by the letter r. Par- is a vowel-r syllable. The ar spelling changes the vowel sound. The ar spelling is pronounced /ar/.
In Your Notebook: Draw a five-column chart. Write ar, er, ir, or, and ur in the top columns on the chart.
Read each word. Sort the word under the correct category. After completing the sort, please copy this sort into your phonics/word study journal.
