Phonics: Lesson 5 - Rereading to Build Fluency

Introduction

Today, you will read words with consonant -le syllables and write in response to reading.

Let’s review how to read unfamiliar words.

Step 1. Look for the word parts at the beginning of the word (prefixes).
Step 2. Look for the word parts at the end of the word (suffixes).
Step 3. In the base word, look for familiar spelling patterns.
Step 4. Sound out and blend together the word parts.
Step 5. Say the word parts fast. Adjust your pronunciation as needed.

Big Changes

Asher and his parents were moving from a little town to a big city. His mom and dad were about to start new jobs in New York. In July, the moving truck arrived. Asher hugged his friends and promised to stay in touch.

At first, living in the city was a struggle for Asher. The city was big and very noisy. The hustle and bustle frightened him. Asher and his parents live in a tall building now. He missed his backyard and treehouse. Mostly, he missed his friends.

In August, Asher met a boy named Gabe who lived in his apartment building. Asher and Gabe went to the local park together. They rode their bicycles and played basketball with the other kids.

In September, Asher began to settle in. He was feeling more at home in New York City. He no longer felt unsettled and frightened. Asher had also learned something important. When you have good friends, it makes big changes easier.
