Phonics: Module 11, Lesson 1 (Day 51): Open Syllables

Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Open Syllables

Introduction

Today, you will identify words with open syllables. You will be working with two-syllable words and learning how an open syllable pattern can help you figure out the vowel sound in that syllable.

Look at the word music. The first syllable in music ends with a vowel. It is called an open syllable. In an open syllable, the vowel sound is usually long.

In Your Notebook: Draw a two-column chart. Write First Syllable Open and First Syllable NOT Open in the columns at the top of the chart.

Read each word. Sort the word under the correct category. After completing the sort, please copy this sort into your phonics/word study journal.
