Your Local Government

Does your town need a new traffic light? Does your neighborhood playground need new equipment? That’s when your local government steps in!

Local governments run the city, town, or suburb where you live. They perform many services that make your life better. For example, they build and maintain sidewalks. They support the libraries and provide police and fire protection. They pass laws and make sure they are carried out.

Most local governments are led by a mayor who serves a four-year term. Many cities also have a city council—a group of elected people who make the city’s laws. Although you aren’t old enough to vote, you can still do your part as a good citizen. How? Help keep your streets and parks clean. Plant and recycle. Be kind and helpful to your neighbors and friends.
