A Debate About Voting

Citizens  of  the  United  States  who  are  eighteen  years  or  older  have  the  right  to  vote. However, many  don’t  use  this  right.  In  our  country,  less  than  60  percent  of  the  people vote.  Here’s  what two  kids  think  about  voting.

Rick:  I  think  people  should  be  required  to  vote.  But  there  should  be  certain  conditions. For example,  people  shouldn’t  have  to  take  time  off  from  their  jobs.  They  should  be given  the  time off.  We  need  to  make  it  easier  for  working  people  to  take  part  in elections.

Josie:  I  think  we  should  urge  everyone  to  vote,  but  it  shouldn’t  be  required.  In  our country, freedom  of  choice  should  always  come  first.  Sometimes  people  don’t  vote because  they  don’t have  enough  information.  Maybe  if  we  find  better  ways  to  inform people,  we’ll  have  a  better voter  turnout.

What  do  you  think?

Discussion:
According to Josie, voting should not be required. Why does she feel that way? What does she think would be helpful in getting people out to vote? Who do you agree with - Rick or Josie? Explain why.
