Hello readers! Today you will practice summarizing text using strategic strategies. Use the anchor chart to guide your thinking and composing.

In Your Notebook:

Directions:

  • Read the passage: Under The Ice Download Under The Ice
  • Read the title and look at the picture.  Jot down what you already know in your reading notebook.
  • Also in your reading notebook, you will write the summary.  Follow the steps below (see pic for example):

Step 1:

Read paragraphs 1-3.

Write a question.  Reread to find the answer.  Write the answer underneath the question.

Step 2:

Read paragraphs 4-6

Write a question.  Reread to find the answer. Write the answer underneath the question.

Step 3:

Read paragraphs 7-9

Write a question.  Reread to find the answer. Write the answer underneath the question.

Step 4:

Use your 3 sentences to write your summary.  Remember to use complete sentences and try to keep it to 20 words..
