The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Once  there  was  a  shepherd  boy  who  tended  a  flock  of  sheep.  Each  day,  he  climbed  the  hill  to  watch  the  sheep  graze.  One  afternoon,  however,  the  boy  got  bored  and  decided  to  play  a  trick.

So  he  stood  and  cried,  “Wolf!”  All  the  farmers  came  running  up  the  hill.  When  they  saw  the  boy  laughing,  they  realized  they  had  been  tricked.  The  farmers  were  quite  annoyed,  and  the  boy  promised  not  to  trick  them  again.  However,  a  few  days  later,  he  became  bored  and  cried  “Wolf!”  once  more.  When  the  farmers  came  running  again  and  found  no  wolf,  they  were  very  angry.

The  next  day,  the  boy  was  watching  the  sheep  graze  when a wolf  appeared!  Frightened,  the  boy  cried,  “Wolf!”  But  this  time  no  one  came,  and  the  sheep  ran  off.

At  sundown,  when  the  boy  didn’t  return  with  the  sheep,  a  farmer climbed  the  hill  and  found  the  boy  crying.  When  the  farmer asked  why,  the  boy  explained  that  this  time  a  wolf  had  truly  appeared.

“We  will  look  for  the  sheep  tomorrow,”  said  the  farmer.  “Meanwhile,  I  hope  you  have  learned  a  good  lesson.  No  one  believes  a  liar,  even  when  he  finally  speaks  the  truth.”
