Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Long i 

Introduction

Today, you will identify words with long i spelling patterns.

The long i sound can be spelled in different ways: i_e, igh, y, ie, and with the letter i when it comes at the end of a syllable.

Exampels: dime, sight, shy, cried, kind

 

In Your Notebook: Please draw a five column chart. Write the long i spelling patterns in the columns on the chart.


Read each word. Sort the word based on its spelling pattern. After completing the sort, please copy this sort into your phonics/word study journal.
