The Coolest Monkeys on Earth

Most monkeys live in tropical climates. But did you know that some monkeys also live in cold places? Meet the snow monkeys that make their home in the northern mountains of Japan.

These unique monkeys have reddish-pink faces and grayish-brown fur. Unlike their tropical relatives, they have learned to adapt to cold winters. They grow a thick, furry winter coat to keep warm. They consume a variety of foods to keep from being hungry. They will even eat bark and soil during winter months.

Snow monkeys live in huge groups called troops. There can be as many as 200–300 monkeys in a troop. During winter, these monkeys huddle together for warmth. But snow monkeys have found an even better way to stay warm. They take hot baths!

In the northern mountains of Japan, there are many natural hot springs. Snow monkeys like to soak in the hot water for hours. Just like humans, they enjoy a hot bath in winter. Don’t you think that makes them the coolest monkeys on Earth?

Discussion:
Why is living in a large group an advantage for snow monkeys? What other animals can you name that live together in large groups?
