Writing: Module 4, Lesson 1 (Day 16): Launching the Workshop & Brave, Bold Opinions: Small Moment Strategy #2

Watermelon vs Seed Idea

Video

How do you know if your idea is a watermelon or a seed? Watermelon topics are big. They are a great place to start. You can take that big broad topic and make it smaller events, kind of like cutting a watermelon into slices. But when you look carefully at a slice of watermelon you can see many black seeds. In order to write a small moment story you need to pick one slice, one event, and choose only one seed idea out of the slice of watermelon event.

Watermelon Matching

Directions:

  • It’s time for you to practice taking a watermelon topic and whittling it down to a seed so you can write your small moment piece.
  • I’m going to give you some topics you can choose from or you can choose a topic of your own.

In Your Notebook:

Directions:

Now it's your turn!

  • On a new page in your writer's notebook write the date in the top right corner.
  • Write:

Think of a watermelon topic: break the watermelon into slices

Slice of watermelon: break the slice into smaller topics, seeds

Seeds of watermelon: choose a seed to become your small moment and circle it (just like I did in the example)

  • We will write on about your seed idea in the next lesson
