How Beaver Got His Flat Tail

Long ago, there was a beaver that liked to brag about his tail. You see, back then, beavers had long, thick, fluffy tails.

“I have the best tail of all!” Beaver would say. The other animals didn’t like his bragging. They left Beaver alone, and he had no friends.

One day, Beaver needed some wood. He got his ax and chopped away at a tree. He didn’t see that the tree was swaying, until it fell right on top of his tail.

Beaver pulled and tugged at his tail. At last, he pulled it out. “My tail is flat now!” he wailed. “It will never be the same.”

In time, Beaver got used to his flat tail. It helped him swim as fast as a fish. Best of all, he stopped bragging and made friends!

Discussion:

Why was Beaver so proud of his tail at the beginning of the story? How did he feel about it at the end? Please write in complete sentences. Also, find sentences from the text to support your answer.
