How Animals Stay Cool

When it’s hot out, how do you stay cool? Maybe you jump in a pool or run under a sprinkler? Water is a great way to cool off! When you come out of the water, the drops on your skin dry. The drying water takes the heat from your body and cools it down.

Some animals cool off with water, too. On hot days, pigs like to splash and get wet. They also like to take mud baths. Why? Mud takes longer to dry than water. Mud also protects the pig’s skin from the sun. It’s like using sunscreen.

Elephants and hippos live in very hot places. So, they take mud and water baths all the time to stay cool. But elephants have another special way to cool off. They use their trunk to give themselves a shower!
