Phonics: Lesson 1 - Identifying Short Vowels

Introduction

Today, you will identify words with short vowels.

Visual

When a single vowel in a syllable is followed by a consonant, the vowel usually has a short sound.

a: bad snack address,
e: set bread chest,
i: hit split listen,
o: hot clock product,
u: fun skunk upset,

 

Please note: Sometimes ea has the short e sound as in the word bread.

In Your Notebook: Please draw a five-column chart and label each column with a vowel.
