Phonics: Lesson 5 - Rereading to Build Fluency

Introduction

Today, you will read words with prefixes (un- and re-) and write in response to the reading.

Visual - Prefixes

A prefix is a group of letters added to the beginning of a base word to change the meaning and create a new word.

For Example: un + happy = unhappy

A base word is a word that can stand on its own and has meaning.

Reread and Respond

Reread the passage.

How to rewrite a story

How to Rewrite a Story

So you have written a great story and showed it to your teacher or your friend. Now the person who read and reviewed your story has told you that it is pretty good, but it can be even better if you rewrite it. What? You thought you were finished. You may be unhappy to hear this news. It may sound unkind. You like your story the way it is and may feel unsure that reworking it would be a good idea. Well, when it comes to writing, rewriting (or revising) almost always improves a story. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Reread the story with the notes from your friend or teacher.
  • Decide which comments to keep. Some advice may be unhelpful.
  • Check that your sentences have correct punctuation.
  • Think about what happens in the story. Is any action unclear?
  • Think about your characters. Maybe you need to rebuild one or more.
  • Read the story out loud. Do you need to make any other changes?
  • Retype or recopy the story, putting in all your changes.

Your hard work paid off. Now this really is a great story!
