Lesson 12 Pollution and Conservation: Cleaning up an Oil Spill

Cleaning up an Oil Spill

Greetings!

Today, we are going to look at a real event that happened in 1989 that caused a lot of pollution: the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. Over 11 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Alaska.

Watch the video below about it to see the impact this oil spill had on the environment.

Then get out your science journal so that you can do another science experiment that models this oil spill on a smaller scale. The directions are on the digital poster under the video link.

Science Journal Questions:

  1. Which material did the best at cleaning up the oil spill?
  2. Based on the video and the experiment, can you think of another way that would clean up an oil spill?
  3. If you have any small toys that you could drop into this plastic container oil spill, would you do it? Why or why not?
  4. Check on your jar from the beginning of this unit. Has anything changed in it? If so, what?
