Lesson 18 Rocks and Soils: Fossil Activity Day
Hello again!
Today, you are going to “create” a fossil using simple items from around your house. The kind of fossil being modeled will not be where there are remains of the organism, but rather the imprint of where the organism once was in the mud or clay.
So bust out your science journal and your pencil to get ready for today’s activity to learn a little more about fossils! The materials you need and the directions can be found on the digital poster below.

Directions: Answer these questions in your science journal after you complete the directions from the digital poster above:
- What did the bread represent in this activity? What about the books?
- Think about the gummy animals being real animals for a moment.
- Let’s say you used a gummy worm and a gummy fish. Which of those two animals if they were real would leave behind fossil evidence through bones?
- Of the worm and the fish, which would be less likely to leave ANY fossil evidence over thousands or millions of years? Why?
