Lesson 4 Rocks and Soils: Attributes Texture
Hello, young scientists!
It’s time to talk about the second attribute of rocks and minerals: texture.
Texture is simply how a rock or mineral feels when you touch it. This can depend on what is in the rock (like shells or compressed sand) or what size the grains/crystals are.
Check out the poster below to see the most common textures. You don’t have to memorize them. It’s simply interesting to see that there are so many textures.

Assignment
Materials needed:
- your science journal
- a pencil
- colored pencils
- rocks you collected yesterday
Science Journal Entry:
- Group your rocks you collected yesterday by how they feel to you. Illustrate this in your journal. Were they grouped differently from yesterday’s attribute of color?
- What did you notice about the texture of your rocks?
- Is there a texture you wish you could feel on a rock?
