Lesson 15: Solar Oven: Test

Solar Oven: Test
It’s time to test your hard work! Today, we will test your solar oven to see if you are able to successfully make a treat, such as melting a s’more or making nachos. Yum!
Assignment
Now that you have made your oven, it is time to get cooking!
Step 1:
Grab a treat that you would like to cook in your solar oven. Some ideas could be melting chocolate, melting cheese for a sandwich or nachos, heating up a cookie, heating up a hotdog, etc.
|
Step 2:
Find the sun. You need to find a sunny spot in your yard that the oven can sit in for most of the day (no less than 4 hours) to heat up.
|
Step 3:
Set your oven on a small table or on a blanket in a sunny spot. Be sure to check in and make several temperature checks and treat observations throughout the day.
- Does the angle of the flap affect the temperature inside the solar oven? How can you check?
- Where is the heat coming from? What is the path of transfer of thermal energy?
|
Step 4:
After 4 hours or so, take the final temperature and bring your oven in to enjoy your treat.
