Let's Shake it Up!

Introduction

Today we will have some fun learning about temperature changes through a hands-on activity. Let's get ready to shake it up!

Assignment

For today's task, you will need:

a plastic container or can with a lid (8-12 oz.)
a thermometer
a small bit of dry sand

Follow the steps below to complete this activity.

Step 1: Fill the container about ¼ full with dry sand. Use your thermometer to measure the temperature of the sand and record it on the data table.

Step 2: Cover the container and shake it vigorously 100 times. Remove the lid, take the temperature of the sand, and record your findings on the data table. Did the temperature change?

Step 3: Replace the lid and repeat the process of shaking 100 times for seven rounds. Be sure to take the temperature of the sand after each 100 shakes and record the findings on the data table each time.

Step4: Using your temperature data, make a graph to share with the class.
