Lesson 1: Phenomenon Intro
Phenomenon Introduction
Introduction
Hello 3rd grade scientists! In this unit, we will be learning about heat energy. Take a moment and think about these questions:
- When you stand outside in direct sunlight, how does it feel?
- What about standing in the shade?
- Why do you think there is a difference?
Watch
Now check out this video, and as you watch, ask yourself: What’s happening here?
In the video, an egg was cooked just by the heat from the sun! Do you think this would have worked in the shade? What about on a cloudy day?
Visual
Today, you will make predictions on whether an object outside might be hot or not. Take a look at the image below and make observations. Do you think it is hot or cold at each of the green dots? Click each spot to read more.
Assignment
For today’s task, you will need your science journal.
In your journal, take a few minutes to name at least 1 additional place or item that might be hot from the playground image above.
Also, name at least 1 place that might not be as hot according to what you see in the image.
As you are making your list, be sure to make a quick note of why specific places on the playground might be hotter or cooler than others.
