Personal and Professional Ethics in the Workplace

Ethics are a set of guiding principles that identify what is right or wrong. We as humans have personal ethical guidelines that are developed based on personal experiences and the feelings associated with those experiences. We often refer to our personal belief set as moral beliefs. Take a moment to investigate your personal moral beliefs.

Healthcare professionals are guided by both legal and ethical principles. As a professional, individuals are required to respond in an ethical manner that respects the individual and provides a safe environment.  

Maintaining professional standards ensures the safety of both the patient and the healthcare employee.  

Professional Standards

  • Deliver care with respect to the person as an individual
  • Individuals have the right to determine what care they will or will not receive
  • Maintain Scope of practice by performing procedures only after training and when legally allowed
  • Do not solicit payment or gifts from patients or their families
  • Present in professional attire
  • Maintain professional colleague interactions
  • Respond to the needs of patients and team members in a caring and companionate manner.
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for actions
  • Seek opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Maintain professional integrity
  • Maintain Privacy and confidentiality of patients and team members.
  • Report errors immediately
  • Treat all patients equally regardless of race, religion, social or economic status, sex or nationality.
