Diversity's Impact on Healthcare

Introduction

Healthcare team members contribute to patient outcomes through cultural awareness and recognition of diversity's impact on patient care. As members of a multicultural world, we hold an ethical responsibility to assess the cultural needs of the diverse patient population serviced. When considering the impact, we must include the types of foods eaten and body language when communicating. But what about the family structure and the psychological aspects associated with absence secondary to illness/hospitalization?  

Members of the healthcare team recognize the impact of diversity awareness on the delivery of quality care. Many hospitals have established infrastructures in place to ensure that the needs of all individuals are addressed.

Cultural Competence

Diversity considerations do not apply only to patient populations but to employee populations as well. Stereotypes and insensitivity can lead to workplace conflict. As discussed in the Teamwork and Leadership module, fostering an environment of respectful communication decreases conflict. Stereotypes can lead to discrimination and destroy the team environment.
