(MM) Lesson 2: Chart, Graphs and Time

Lesson 2: Chart, Graphs, and Time

Data collection occurs in all professional areas. Healthcare is no different. The question that you are probably pondering is "Why?"

What is the purpose of collecting data? Well, collecting data provides the following:

  1. A record of information
  2. A method of organizing the information
  3. An opportunity for evaluating the outcome or effects related to the information
  4. An opportunity to make decisions about important issues and possibly implement change.

Let's take a look at a Did You Know video provided by the National Cancer Institute, SEER Program. Please watch the following video.

Did you notice the time period included in the U.S. Lung and Bronchus Cancer Annual Incident Rate Chart? It spans 35 years! The video also identifies different peak and decline time periods for women and men. Do you remember the peak or year of the highest incident for all? Of course you do, it occurred around 1990. But it wasn't the same for men and women. Take a moment to review the video again if you do not remember the difference in the decline time period.

Now let's take a look at one more. Please watch the video below.

This presentation identified a number of factors collected through the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The information presented identifies a direct link between obesity and an increased risk for cancer. Both of these videos used mathematical concepts to present the information collected, the risk factors associated with the activity, and strategies to decrease those risk factors.

The 24-hour clock is the method of recording time between the hours of 00:00 to 24:00. This method is aligned with the number of hours in the day and eliminates the use of AM and PM.
