Conversion Methods

As a healthcare employee, you will be confronted with converting measurements obtained using one system into the equivalents of another system. Let's explore some standard equivalents between the household and metric systems.

Conversion Methods
Measuring Equivalents Conversion Methods Examples
2.2 lb = 1 kg

Pounds to kilograms

Divide the number of pounds by 2.2

110 lb/2.2 = 50 kg

Kilograms to pounds

Multiply the number of kilograms by 2.2

72 kg x 2.2 = 158 lbs
1 tsp = 5 mL

Teaspoons to milliliters

Multiply the number of teaspoons by 5

2 tsp x 5 = 10 mL
1 oz = 30 mL

Ounces to milliliters

Multiply the number of ounces by 30

0.5 oz x 30 = 15 mL
1 qt = 1,000 mL

Quarts to milliliters

Multiply the number of quarts by 1000

5 qt x 1,000 = 5,000 mL
1 in = 2.54 cm

Inches to centimeters

Multiply the number of inches by 2.54

72 in x 2.54 = 180 cm

Centimeters to inches

Divide the number of centimeters by 2.54

220 cm/2.54 = 88 inches
Fahrenheit (F) to Celsius (C)

LaTeX: \left(^{\circ}F-32\right)\times0.5556(F32)×0.5556

LaTeX: \left(98-32\right)\times0.55568=36.7^{\circ}(9832)×0.55568=36.7
Celsius to Fahrenheit

LaTeX: \left(^{\circ}C\times1.8\right)+32(C×1.8)+32

LaTeX: \left(0\times1.8\right)+32=32.0^{\circ}(0×1.8)+32=32.0

To convert meters to inches, move the decimal first and then use the centimeters (cm) to inches (in) formula.

14m = how many inches? 14 meters equals 1400 centimeters, then divide by 2.54 to get 551 inches
