Patients' Rights and Responsibilities

We discussed the Patients' Bill of Rights in the Ethics module. Please be reminded that a violation of patients' rights is an ethical concern that has legal support. Do you remember exploring the American Hospital Association Patient Care Partnership document? Well, there are many other organizations that offer a bill of rights, but the essential elements are all the same:

Patients have a right to

  • Dignity, Respect, and Freedom
  • Informed Consent
  • Advance directives
  • Privacy and confidential treatment
  • Response to request for services
  • Refuse services
  • Continuity of care
  • Review medical records, and bills, and receive an explanation of charges
  • Be informed of institutional rules and regulations
  • Freedom from abuse, chemical/physical restraint
  • Participate in social and religious activities of their choice
