(IC) Handwashing Lesson
Handwashing
Throughout this module, you have seen that proper handwashing is important in keeping the spread of disease down. In fact, it is the MOST important factor in stopping the spread of pathogens from one person to the next. Healthcare workers must wash their hands more thoroughly than others to keep from spreading diseases from one patient to the next (nosocomial infections) or to keep themselves safe from illnesses.
Healthcare workers perform an "Aseptic handwashing technique".
You may wonder if the steps we take at home to wash our hands are the same in the healthcare environment. The fact is that in the healthcare environment, there are more steps to take. That is why it is called "Aseptic" handwashing. Think about what you do when you wash your hands: How long does it take? How thorough are you?
