Patient-Centered Care: Encouraging Consumer Ownership of Care

In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility. Quote from Eleanor Roosevelt

Personal choice is a right that our forefathers died to defend. Personal choice is also a freedom that has demanded payment from the U.S. Health System in the form of managing health conditions directly linked to an individual's right to choose. The CDC has recognized the expanding waistline of the American public as an epidemic of monumental proportions. Fostering an environment that promotes responsible choice is built through the consumer of health services taking ownership of their personal health. Historically, the U. S. Healthcare system has provided a response to infectious disease as defined by the needs of the time period. The shift to chronic disease management identified a link between societal behaviors and chronic disease patterns. Today's healthcare system works to empower the patient to take control of their personal health destiny.
