The Data Process

Data Process Presentation

First, take a look at the Data Process presentation below to learn about each of the steps in data processing.

How do you turn raw data into useful information?

Data mining is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information. The patterns, associations, or relationships among all this data can provide information.

Data can be divided into two major classifications:

Quantitative data is a type of data that can be quantified and verified. It is used with statistical manipulation.

  • It is numerical.
  • It deals with numbers.
  • It can be measured.

Examples of quantitative data are scores on achievement tests, number of hours of study, or number of students on the honor roll.

Qualitative data is data about qualities that cannot be measured. It is collected by observing what people do and say. Examples of qualitative data are level of positive school spirit or which coffee has the most robust aroma. It has some subjectivity to the analysis.

  • It deals with descriptions.
  • It is observed not measured.
  • It deals with qualities and can be subjective.

The type of data you collect depends on the question you want to answer and your resources.
