MSC-Review Lesson

Review Lesson

A model is an abstraction of a real world system that behaves much like the original. A simulation is the running of the computer model to analyze and evaluate the performance of a system. Computer models are created and used for many purposes such as:

  • make predictions about expected behavior given different input scenarios.
  • train employees and users before using the real system.
  • test and create new products to determine their effectiveness.
  • gain knowledge about a real system.
  • gain knowledge about past events and how they occurred.

Some of the benefits of simulations are safety, cost, and time. Models can be made using spreadsheet software or simulation software. Different types of simulations are stochastic, discrete, discriminate, and continuous. Agent based models can be used to teach and create models used in simulations. Agent based models interact according to a set of protocols defined in the simulation to represent how the individuals might interact in the real world. Each agent can recognize and reason about the traits of other agents that it comes into contact with in the simulation.
