Essay Requirements
The purpose of the SAT essay is to determine whether students are proficient in reading and writing and can analyze a text supported by critical reasoning and evidence drawn from the source. Students will be asked to explain how the author of the source builds an argument to persuade an audience. Responses are NOT to focus on whether the student agrees or disagrees with the argument presented, but rather on HOW the author builds the argument.
The essay section is 50 minutes in length, and students will receive one passage and one prompt. Each essay will receive a score of 1-4 in three different areas: reading, writing, and analysis. The essay is an optional portion of the exam. Many colleges will require that students complete this section of the SAT, but some may not. If you are unsure whether or not the college of your choice requires the essay, it is best to complete the essay section just in case.
