Reading for Pleasure

image of books in a heart shape One of the best things students can do to help them with the SAT reading section is to read daily. Believe it or not, when you practice the act of reading, you are learning to decode words. This skill also helps you to learn vocabulary in context. You are letting your brain exercise its ability to reason and think critically. Reading often will increase your reading comprehension skills making those SAT passages less overwhelming!

Some students love to read! Some do not. The key is finding something that you are interested in reading. It only takes one good book to turn someone into a lifelong reader! One of the major factors in motivating students to read is allowing them to read what they want. So for this assignment, students will select an age-appropriate book of their choice to read throughout the duration of this class. Remember that you will read this book while completing the other modules in this course. Check your calendar for the details.

Here are the book selection parameters:

  1. Your book must be age-appropriate. Challenge yourself! Try reading something college-level.
  2. You must choose a book that has not already been turned into a movie.
  3. Your book should have a minimum of 200 pages.

Those are the only real restrictions. You can choose to read fiction, nonfiction, a biography, etc. The sky's the limit with this assignment! If you are having trouble coming up with a book title, ask your teacher for more resources to help you.

Once students have finished reading their novel, they will be required to complete several assignments related to the book. Once again, these assignments will not be due until much later in the course. You will work on these assignments while completing other modules in the course.
