You have read, watched, and practiced all of the operational skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) working rational expressions, and now it is time to put them all together to solve rational functions (equations).

In general, to solve a rational equation,

  • Multiply each (and every) term on both sides of the equation by the LCD (Least Common Denominator). The LCD is the same thing as the Least Common Multiple (LCM).
  • Simplify and solve the resulting polynomial equation.

To solve a rational equation for which each side of the equation is a single rational expression, you can use the concept of cross multiplying.

Meticulously watch and take notes on the following four videos that discuss and model the concepts involved in solving rational equations. After watching these teaching videos, complete the practice items provided so that you will master these concepts.
