WU - Virtual School Group Exhibition (Lesson)

Virtual School Group Exhibition

Exhibiting your artwork is a vital step in growing as an artist. Seeing your work on display changes how you feel about your work and allows others to interact with it. This lesson will explore ways to collaborate online for a group exhibition with your classmates.

When an artist first starts showing their work, a group show is often the first venue. Sometimes shows are juried and work must be submitted in advance with inclusion not guaranteed, or it could be a collection of like-minded people self-organizing a show. A group show is an excellent introduction to exhibiting your artwork. It allows you to focus on selecting the best piece for the show, creating a professional presentation (matting, framing, hanging wire, artist bio, title, size info, etc.), and experiencing an opening without all of the pressure being on you alone.

Since this in an online course, it makes sense that our group exhibition also be online. There are what seems like endless possibilities for collaborating online. Below are a few easily accessible options. Spend some time navigating and investigating each.

Which option do you think would be best for your class to use to coordinate a group exhibition of their best artwork from this course?

  • PowerPoint: Microsoft Powerpoint is available to all GAVS students. Open the program on your computer and investigate how it could be used to create a collaborative online exhibition.
  • Prezi: An online presentation platform that uses “motion, zoom, and spatial relationships” to create interactive presentations.
  • Mural: An online presentation platform that uses “motion, zoom, and spatial relationships” to create interactive presentations.
  • Padlet: Allows people to collaborate on the same “boards” to make and share content with others. It supports a wide variety of file types.
  • Flipgrid: An online platform geared toward video discussions.
  • Animoto: An online drag-and-drop video maker.
  • Kunstmatrix: An online platform that allows you to create a digital 3D space to showcase artwork.
  • Adobe Spark: Can be used to create web pages and short videos.
  • Instagram: A social network site for sharing photos and videos.

Not sure which option to choose? Use the following activity to help you determine the pros and cons of each platform and hopefully come to a method that you are comfortable pitching to the group in the upcoming discussion.
