Mastering AP Psychology FRQs
What do I do BEFORE I start writing?
- Read the questions carefully the first time.
- Don't rush and misunderstand the questions.

- Decide which question is easier for you.
- Answer that question first.
- Circle or underline key terms.
- Terms/concepts, theories, and people the question asks you to define.
- Understand the verbs. Each verb asks you to answer differently.
- You can put squares around the verb in each part.
- Identify
- Name/point out psychological concepts as they relate to the question.
- Show or Describe
- Give details about the essential characteristics and/or examples of a concept or theory.
- Explain, apply, discuss, relate, or demonstrate
- Make logical and clear connections among the prompt (i.e., situation or research study), question, and psychological concepts.
- Spend a few minutes on pre-writing for both FRQs.
- Do not start writing without a plan.
- Immediately after reading the prompt, write notes next to it.
- Your notes won't affect your score.
- You can write definitions, examples, terms, researchers, or studies that will be part of your FRQ, so you don't forget to include them.
How do I format FRQs?
- GOAL: Make your FRQ easy for the exam reader to understand.
- Write clearly and neatly.
- If you cross out information, draw a single, neat line. Don't scribble.
- If you need to add information later, draw an arrow or use a star (*).
- Organize your FRQ properly.
- This is not an English essay! No five-paragraph essay formats.
- Do not include an introduction or a conclusion.
- You will not gain points. You will only lose time.

- Answer the parts (A, B, C, etc.) in the same order as the question.

What should my writing style be like?
- Be clear, concise, and direct.
- Do not include any fluff (unnecessary information that won't earn you points).
- Be specific, not general, or vague, and include important details.
- Do not write down all the information that comes to mind.
- The information you provide must relate to the question.
- Check or cross off parts of the prompt as you write.
- Make sure you don't forget to include any part.
