Individuals with a "normal" personality have traits that are consistent over time and situations and are well-adjusted, flexible, and adaptive. Those suffering from personality disorders have traits that are inflexible and maladaptive across a wide range of situations. These maladaptive traits dominate the individual's personality. Symptoms are evident by adolescence or young adulthood and are characterized by deviation from accepted social norms. During the DSM-5 revision, the American Psychiatric Association decided to retain the personality disorders from the DSM-IV.
