Mastering AP Psychology FRQs

What do I do BEFORE I start writing?

  1. Read the questions carefully the first time.
    • Don't rush and misunderstand the questions. Designer.png
  2. Decide which question is easier for you.
    • Answer that question first.
  3. Circle or underline key terms.
    • Terms/concepts, theories, and people the question asks you to define.
  4. Understand the verbs. Each verb asks you to answer differently.
    • You can put squares around the verb in each part.
    • Identify
      • Name/point out psychological concepts as they relate to the question.
    • Show or Describe
      • Give details about the essential characteristics and/or examples of a concept or theory.
    • Explain, apply, discuss, relate, or demonstrate
      • Make logical and clear connections among the prompt (i.e., situation or research study), question, and psychological concepts.
  5. Spend a few minutes on pre-writing for both FRQs.
    • Do not start writing without a plan.
    • Immediately after reading the prompt, write notes next to it.
      • Your notes won't affect your score.
      • You can write definitions, examples, terms, researchers, or studies that will be part of your FRQ, so you don't forget to include them.

How do I format FRQs?

  • GOAL: Make your FRQ easy for the exam reader to understand.
  • Write clearly and neatly.
    • If you cross out information, draw a single, neat line. Don't scribble.
    • If you need to add information later, draw an arrow or use a star (*).
  • Organize your FRQ properly.
    • This is not an English essay! No five-paragraph essay formats.
      • Do not include an introduction or a conclusion.
        • You will not gain points. You will only lose time.
    • Answer the parts (A, B, C, etc.) in the same order as the question.
        • Write about the terms in each part in order.
        • You may lose points if you don't do this.
    • Leave spaces between parts (as organized in the prompt).
        • Do not write your FRQ in one continuous block.
    • You can create sections and label them as A, B, C, etc.
          • Each section will include a paragraph of about 2-5 sentences (as many as it takes to answer).
    • You MUST write in full sentences/paragraphs.
      • You will not earn points for lists or outlines.

What should my writing style be like?

  • Be clear, concise, and direct.
    • Do not include any fluff (unnecessary information that won't earn you points).
    • Be specific, not general, or vague, and include important details.
  • Do not write down all the information that comes to mind.
    • The information you provide must relate to the question.
  • Check or cross off parts of the prompt as you write.
    • Make sure you don't forget to include any part.
