Reading Assignment: John and Abigail Adams

The following letters were written between John and Abigail Adams, who would become the President and First Lady of the newly formed United States. Their courtship and marriage have been preserved through their ample and regular letter correspondence. Keep in mind your knowledge of American history and see how that history plays into the exchanges between John and Abigail. Included in the links are transcripts of the letters; however, be sure to view the handwritten copies of the letters as well – it’s quite intriguing to consider the history that was being made as the two were writing these letters to one another!
