HRE - Reading Floor Plans Lesson

Reading Floor Plans

Introduction

We’ve already seen that math is involved in purchasing a house as well as in paying for the utilities to keep it running. Home improvements and repairs involve a lot of math as well! How many cans of paint will I need to paint these walls? How many feet of molding will be necessary to cover the whole room? Many aspects of home improvement and interior design deal with math concepts that you may want to know.

Perimeter, Area, and Volume Review

Review: Let’s review scale factors, perimeter, area, and volume. Watch the following video and work along with the examples shown.

Summary:

  • To find the perimeter of a polygon, add the lengths of all sides.
  • Area of a rectangle = base x height
  • Area of a triangle = 1/2 x base x height
  • Volume of a cube/prism = length x width x height

Scale Factors

Coordinate Geometry Review

Review: Let’s review the coordinate grid and the distance formula. Watch the following video and work along with the examples shown.

Summary:

  • Distance Formula: LaTeX: d=\sqrt{(x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2}d=(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2

Distance Formula

Click the arrow on the bottom right to move through the activity and learn how to apply the distance formula when using blueprints.
