Global Resistance to Established Power Structures After 1900 Lesson
Although conflict was a prominent feature of the 20th century, many individuals and groups-including states-opposed this trend. Some individuals and groups, though, ended up far intensifying the conflicts. There were many groups and individuals that challenged the many wars of the century. However, leaders did exist who promoted the practice of nonviolence as a way to bring about change, such as Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela. Militaries and militarized states will also respond to these conflicts, but not in a peaceful manner as the men above, but in a way that proliferated conflicts in ways that further intensified the conflict. Some movements utilized violence against civilians as a means to achieve their political aims as well.
