This means governments used a variety of strategies to conduct war including political propaganda, art, media, and intensified forms of nationalism in order to mobilize populations both at home and in their colonies for the purpose of waging war. World War I also saw the introduction of new military technologies such as the tank, submarines, machine guns, and poison gas, which led to an increased level of wartime causalities.
