(COI) Global Economic Development & Economic Imperialism Lesson

Global Economic Development & Economic Imperialism Lesson

As countries industrialized, the need for raw materials grew. Along with that also came the need for an increased food supply to accommodate the growing population that arose in cities due to industrialization. This led to the growth in export economies across the globe that specialized in commercial extraction of raw materials and the production of food and industrial crops. This practice of economic imperialism will lead to the development of a global economy. Countries such as Britain, France and the United States will take advantage of their economic advantage and use it to expand their influence and power. Britain and France will expand their influence in China through the Opium Wars, finding a product to reverse the favorable balance of trade China once enjoyed, as massive quantities of the drug are imported in. This is just one example of economic imperialism. Industrialized countries and the businesses in those countries will focus their attentions on primarily Asia and Latin America as they sought those raw materials and crops. This gave the merchants and businesses of industrialized countries of Europe and the United States a distinct advantage economically when it came to trade.
