The Atlantic Slave Trade 1450-1750c Lesson

SubSaharan Africa (1450-1750)

  • The slave trade was conducted between Europeans and African societies along Africa's western coast, such as Asante and Dahomey. The Africans rounded up captives from the interior of the continent, and then traded these captives to the Europeans, usually for guns.
  • This guns-for-slaves cycle increased the power of the African slave traders. As they traded more slaves, they were able to gain more guns, which allowed them to more effectively capture slaves.
  • The slaves voyage across the Atlantic to the New World was known as the Middle Passage, where living conditions were terrible and mortality rates were very high (roughly about 18 percent).
  • A majority of slaves coming to the Americas were men.
