The Silk Roads

While the Silk Roads continued to transport its luxury goods it was also instrumental in helping to diffuse important ideas and technologies as well throughout the years it prospered. Although it did a great deal of good for the cultures it interacted with not all interactions were positive though along the Silk Roads, as it also spread diseases such as the Black Death along its networks leading to the death of about one-third of Europe's population. Even still though, culture, politics and technology will transform the Silk Roads greatly impacting all cultures and peoples of its vast network.  

 

Global Connections

As empires along the Silk Roads rose and fell, trade was revived and refreshed. Sharia law would protect Islamic merchants across the Dar-al-Islam and also protected outside merchants as well which many took advantage of. These changes helped to protect commerce along the Silk Roads but the most prominent boost of all during this time period came with the rise of the Mongol Empire.   After the defeated the Abbasid caliphate in 1258, the Pax Mongolica, or Mongol peace, would then place a great majority of the Silk Roads under Mongol rule. The Mongol Empire helped to bring safe travel to the Silk Roads and impose strict punishments on those that disrupted trade.
